Rescued Gecko.... Long

Aisha Mar 30, 2004 02:48 PM

I have a neighbor who a couple weeks ago mentioned his son had a leopard gecko. He knew I had some lizards and asked for some advice because the gecko didn't seem to act right. What I saw was it was on sand, dead crickets everywhere, shed stuck on his feet so bad that he wasn't using one very well, a dried out water dish and a regular white light bulb that they leave on 24/7. His tail looked ok but is saw no signs of poop. I got him some mealworms, told him to soak the feet, make sure there is water all the time, switch the light bulb to a red/blue/black light even that he could get a black one at odd lots for a $1 and take him off sand because he might be impacted. So..... today I got a knock on my door and the neighbor has his car pack and said his son and him are leaving town because he got into some trouble with a woman???? And wanted me to take is gecko. I said ok and he handed me his tank. When I looked at the gecko he was worse then before. The guy never cleaned the feet, changed the sand, or changed the light bulb. I soaked his feet and got most of the skin off but his feet are raw, changed the sand to paper towels, put a dish of vitamins and mealworms and changed light bulb to a blue light. His feet are really bad how should I clean them peroxide and Neosporin? He still isn't using one foot very well and he is opening his mouth every onces and awhile.Any advice would help thanks.

i would clean with peroxide (make sure it doesn't go near the head) then go to the vets. if it isn't defecating it may be impacted, have worms, parasites, or any number of things.

Opening of the mouth repeatedly suggests a respiratory infection. Take a look at it's nostrils and mouth and see if there is any discharge or bubbly-ness.

I would have to advise against using peroxide as it's toxic and the gecko make lick it. I would clean the feet with warmish water and apply neosporin. Keep the gecko slightly warmer (90 deg F) to help with healing and the possible respiratory infection.

Did you try feeding it? Will it eat? and as Roach suggested, a vet visit is a must.

Make sure you take him by a vet, and also make sure to keep him from getting any kind of an infection! I'm really sorry that guy did that, it really makes me mad.

The sad part is he took his two dogs to the pound.I wish I could have done something for them but the chow is mean and hates everyone even the owners and the other is a pit bull which is illegal to have without insurance in town so I know they are going to be put to sleep. I am going to the vet friday his one leg is really worrying me. He sometimes walks with the foot twisted backwards putting the weight on the wrist. Thank You everyone who responded. I'll just use warm water and Neosporin to clean his feet.
