Nest Box?

azlunchbox Mar 30, 2004 03:07 PM

Hey everyone....i was just wondering about a Nest Box.....i'm hopeing to have a gravid female sooner or later and have been reading up on it. First off i haven't found anywhere that lists how deep it should be....does anyone know of a reccomended depth for the box?

ALSO....i've read both to use Vermiculite....and also to use a Playground sand/Perlite free potting soil mix.

Which of these is better in your opinions?.....this will be my first time breeding reptiles....although i have had reptiles for some time now. I hope i can figure it all out and everything goes good.

I have no idea if it's appropriate or not since I just added a box to the enclosure and I've not bred my uros, but mine is about the bottom 1/2 to 2/3 of a rubbermaid 3.3 gallon tub - maybe 4" deep? Doug's site said he uses 3.3 or 5 gallon tubs for nest boxes and a 3.3 fit better in my cage. I used the 3" tube like he mentioned, and put it as high as I could into the side of the box. I filled the box with the soil/sand mixture as full as I could up to where the tube goes in the box.

And I think I recall reading that soil/sand is good for the laying boxes, then when the eggs are moved to the incubator, to use vermiculite. But hey - I can only regurgitate what I've read.

I don't know if that's any help since I've not bred them, but that's what I did.
