Can someone ID this snake? ***PICS***

Charlotte Mar 30, 2004 03:11 PM

This little guy was found today buried in some pine needles...

Location: North Alabama

Very blurry... sorry...

Excuse the crappy pics!

He looks very racer-ish. Black, with a grey pattern that slowly fades to nothing twords his tail. Very pretty coppery spots on his underside.... fiesty little guy.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Charlotte

Racer or whipsnake. In your area I would say Racer.

Just my .02

It's a racer, I'm unsure of the sub-species though.

That looks like a yearling southern Black racer. They are grey with rusty blotches when hatched also the rust colored dots down the sides near the bottom. As they age they gradually become darker by about 2.5 years they are totally black.

Coluber constrictor priapus - Southern Black Racer. He will lose his patterns as he ages.
