Can someone ID this snake?? Found In North Alabama... ***PICS***

Charlotte Mar 30, 2004 03:14 PM

This little guy was found today buried in some pine needles...

Location: North Alabama

Very blurry... sorry...

Excuse the crappy pics!

Black, with a grey pattern that slowly fades to nothing twords his tail. Very pretty coppery spots on his underside.... fiesty little guy.

Possible black rat snake?

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Charlotte

That's a baby racer and could be either Coluber c. constrictor or Coluber c. priapus. Both forms occur in Northern AL.

Got your email but I am unable to reply. I keep getting my replies back as undeliverable. Maybe you have some kind of spamguard on? Those things are annoying.

That looks a lot like a hatchling Eastern Coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum flagellum) to me. Let it go, they are protected here in Alabama.
