They're here! Leopard Rat snakes pics...

I've been waiting for the weather to warm up to get this pair shipped. The female is about 5 yrs old and the male looks to be 2-3 yrs old. I'm very hopeful that after a nice brumation next winter they will grace me with a few eggs. I've wanted a pair of these since I first saw them in a book in the 70s. I just snapped a few pics before getting them settled in their quarantine enclosures. Any suggestions on their care would be greatly appreciated! Yeah!

Congrats Lora. Those are some nice looking animals and they look like they have great size to them too.

Congratulations with your situla’s. They are nice snakes. Do you now from witch country they are? I have some from Croatia and Greece. Form Greece I have a male that is striped. (see pic.) I hope for you that you have lots off eggs next year.

Thanks for the replies! I don't have locallity data on them, just that they are captive bred. I don't know if locallities can be differentiated visually, any tips? Nice pic of your striped male also Jan! If the pair breeds next year, I'll be sure to post about it.

Nice snakes, Lora.

I have five babies from 2003 and I raised three before to adults. I may have a couple tips you can use.

The '03 babies are doing great. Four of them shed last couple days and ate two or three pinks each, live. When you feed live, sometimes they won't take f/t later. They eat best right after the shed. I would try to feed them again after about a week, or so. They can take a fairly large amt. of food in a meal. They don't feed too well after a couple feedings, until after next shed.

I had 1.2 before and the females got larger than the male. I don't know if that is standard, or not, but it doesn't necessarily mean a difference in age.

They seem pretty tolerant of dry conditions. My humidity is around 30% all winter, and closer to 50% in summer. They have never had any trouble shedding, or needed any extra humidity. I think they are intermediate bt. racers and ratsnakes myself.

They are pretty cool tolerant. I keep mine bt. 70 and 80*F. most of the year, with no extra heat, except rarely an overhead lamp. They never regurge. Adults can brumate for two or three months with no problems at cold temps, like around 55*F., or less. Oh, and they do better when kept alone, according to my observations.

Good luck...TC.

So far, I've been letting them settle in and will try feeding the pair tonight. The female ate f/t with her last keeper but the male still eats live so I'll be working to get him switched if possible over the next few months. I'm keeping them separately until next spring as they weren't brumated this winter. I've got them on the cool side, temp range 69 cool 78 warm over a small heat mat (1/4 of their tubs).

The ages I gave are based on what the seller told me and the female is definitely full adult size. She's got really nice girth though I haven't weighed her yet. They both seem to be pretty easy going snakes when handled which I hadn't really expected.

I appreciate your advice, thanks for taking the time to reply!
