Breeding weight?

forsakened Mar 30, 2004 05:58 PM

What is the recommended breeding weight for males and females? Also what is the age at which they reach maturity and minimum weight at which you should breed?

Thanks, and any other advice is welcome.

It depends...On what, I do not know. Many people get 1.5 yr old males to breed, whatever their size may be. If a female is "power-fed" she might reach the recommended 1500g in 1.5 yrs, but may or may not produce. I have not had any luck getting 1.5 yr old males to breed (tried twice), but at 2.5 yrs, they really go at it. I've never forced a female up to 1500g in 1.5 yrs either, so can't share personal experience there. Chances for success are much greater with 2.5 year-olds... males over 800g and females over 1500g. Good luck.

It doesn't take "powerfeeding" as you put it to get females up to breeding size by 1.5 years. If my females will eat, then I feeed them, no "forcing" there. I would guess that you're just not feeding your females when they want to eat.
