help w a aggressive king

cbluefairy Mar 30, 2004 08:06 PM

i was wondering if putting a cali king who is very aggressive (biting and rattling and musking etc)into a smaller tank would curb the meanness? i have been told a 55 gallon is too big for a kingsnake to feel safe and this may be causing him to be mean if i put him into a 20 long tank would this help? would it be to small for him? he is about 3 1/2 ft long i dont know what else to do we are sick of getting bit and would like to be able to hold him without getting sprayed every time,i have never known a king to be this mean before ,,,,,help!!

I've heard that smaller tanks are better for young milksnakes, but I don't think tank size is nearly as important as good hide spots on each end of the tank. Sounds like the real problem has to do more with simply spending time handling the snake. Don't put it back when it musks, bites, and so on. It will soon learn that such nastiness is ineffective and more importantly, that you aren't a predator looking for a snake meal. There are some snakes, however, that are nervous and are nasty (individual temperament)no matter what.
