Joel & Chris Allen... best buy for a cave.basking rock

CheriS Jun 12, 2003 08:40 PM

The same place that carries the rep-cal pellets at that good price also has a cave/basking rock that our dragons really love, they are heavy, large eoungh for the biggest dragon and only cost $6.49!!!

The dragons don't use the cave (babies do) but this is their favorite basking thing. Is also warms up and holds some heat from the lights. It holds a dozen babies with space for more.

We get the larger-mid size one(one down from the large), its almost flat, the really big one is domed shape. It also sits well in a pool of water and does not move, so they can bask on it outside, its the rock in the picture of the girls in the pool in the post about german giants

Hi CheriS,
Can you give me the approximate width, length and height on that.
I've been seriously considering buying one.
Thanks,
Karen

CheriS Jun 12, 2003 11:07 PM

It's 4 inches at the highest point, about 2 inches at the lowest(maybe a bit less). It banks slightly. 11 1/2 inches at widest x 9 inches with rounded corners

Thanks, CheriS. I'll have to buy some. Definately a good deal.
Take care,
Karen

Hey Cheri. I bought 3 of those caves (size small) for the baby hatchlings and they work good. I had rocks for two of the cages but didnt for the other 3 so I went and bought those at the pet store. The small ones are good for young babies or smaller lizards like geckos. At 3 weeks of age I can see my Bearded Dragon babies quickly outgrowing the cave part and soon after will outgrow the rock/basking part as well

They do heat up great under a light and the dragons seem to really like them. When they get older I might go with the biggest size! Right now only one baby (Junior) uses the cave, the two little girls I dont even think know its there.

I paid 3.99 each in a pet store for the smallest size. Which I didnt think was a bad price at all. I didnt check the price of the larger ones.

thanks for the info.............now how are they with poop cleaning? lol. I have used all different rocks/bricks and some seem to clean much better than others, even when using a stiff brush. So do these come clean when cleaned, and not stain or anything?

CheriS Jun 12, 2003 11:37 PM

I have two in with three adult girls and just wipe it off with baby fresh wipes, then take one once a week to clean, easy cleaning in with a toothbrush, it has some grooves in the, but not deep.

I have tried probably a dozen different stones, custom made and natural rocks, nothing has worked as well at holding warmth or the dragons liked as well as these. Some we paid $25 for and the dragons still like these $6.49 ones best. LIke I said before they don't use the cave, but rarely leave the basking top of it. Here is our adult female Myst zonking out on her's.

We had one lose a nail in the mesh one too, so I ordered several from her

Speaking of hammocks...I noticed you can get a solid type hammock sold for ferrets. It looks like it is rubberized mesh so there are no actual holes. Pricely though so I may just make my own using canvas or something similiar.

Speaking of the Ornate Sky Fund, any updates on how she is doing?

CheriS Jun 13, 2003 06:34 PM

Gina has left the hospital and is in rehab. They plan on getting her a voice activated computer and when she is up to it she can get online and talk to others....... she still has a long way to go and more surgeries, but I understand she is doing well in the rehab

Ohhh these are not the rock caves I first thought they were...I know you can get ones that have an almost tunnel structure within with several heights...but I think they are heated by electricity (like heat rocks). But these ones are just sculpted rock shapes. I wonder what material they are made from..maybe ground up stone mixed with some sort of fixative.

I may try and find a Canadian dealer in these rock caves for my beardie since he seems to have outgrown the $1 plastic flower pot I converted into a hide. Have pictures scanned for him now...just have to create a gallery before I Can post them here, will do that tonight hopefully.

You said one down from the large. They have 4 sizes pictured but when you click on the drop down for pricing, they only have X large, Large, and small?
Do you mean the Large?

I got an XLarge at pets mart 0n the discount rack, they had a couple of them, the others were marked $12. the one I got was marked $6. The manager tried not to give it to me,,"jerk". I ask them, "Don't you honor your marked price?"
She said " We will but it's obvious, it's supposed to be $12." with a real snotty voice.

Anyway,, they were selling them for $12. and that was supposed to be a discount price.

You are just the price shopper aren't you? Please keep them coming.

You will see some of those in my pics soon.. Thanks

reptiledirect is out of the medium size right now, they do usually carry them

Yeah, I do price shop a lot, I want the dragons to have a good happy life, we tried so many things... those red clay ones and some of the others stay cold even when right under the light, some are too hard to clean and others I was afraid would harbor bacteria. Some we tried had sharp spots on them... these ones seem perfect and inexpensive.

Another good one is the stair step cave, but its pretty expensive

barker109 Jun 13, 2003 11:14 PM

You have me interested again. Where did you find the stair step caves. I didn't see them at Reptiledirect. I do love that place though.
Take care,
Karen

We first found one at Pet Land, but they were $25 small and $35 large ,this year we found a guy that attends the shows and sells tanks for $1 a gallon and he had them for $10 small and $15 large ones.

This one also holds heat well
