And here I thought I was clever thinking of calling my dragon Puff..seems Im not the only one that clever. It is a really popular name! But I wonder who has dragons named Puff and Jackie and Hannah (Honalei)...

but it's soooo sad....poor puff

Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, oh
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.

Together they would travel on boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name, oh

CHORUS

A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giants's rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So, Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave, oh

CHORUS

Sorry, I never knew all the words and it just seems wrong for kids. Exactly what kind of message is trying to be sent?

Anyone know?

Well....it was written and sung in the 1960's....Peter, Paul and Mary sung it in 1963 to start.....I don't know if it was every intended originally for kids but was on children's albums in the mid to late 60's.....

Some said it was really about marijuana...ie the puff the magic....etc.....I don't really know.....

Is very sad though it you take it literally that Puff gives up when his friend dies.....some also said it was an anti war song about those losing friends in the war....

I certainly don't know myself and wouldn't even venture to guess what the writer was doing for sure.....

"A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys

I took it as the little boy grew up and lost interest and just stopped coming to see Puff. Either way, poor Puff.

I gotta tell you it's kind of disturbing to think I used to like that song but never actually realized what it was saying?

Is it still a popular kids song?

No, its not as popular as when we were kids. Maybe there's a good reason for that. LOL I loved that song so much, but it always made me cry. Now I have my own magick dragons so I am not sad anymore lol Just think, our kids will be having this discussion about Barney one day. hehehehe!!!

Not to get philosophical but to me puff represents innocence and the wonder of being a child, something that as we grow older seems to die in all of us. Keeping those feelings and looking at life through a child’s eyes is how to keep puff alive. Don't know if that’s the meaning, but war protest songs were very popular than and since war takes away the innocence of everyone involved and children have to grow up faster it makes sense to me.

So keep Puff alive and look at the world through a childs eyes. Enjoy some of the simple things in life like the wave or bob of a dragon. Stop and smell the roses.

Just my opinion

BTW Tracey, thanks for posting the words
