Am I using to many lights for my panther.

pernads Mar 30, 2004 11:19 PM

My cage is pretty large, and its all screen. I have 2 hibiscous plants and a ficus plant, and lots of braches and vines. The are the lights i have:

2 seperate 18" ESU 7% UVB Tubes (on 12 hours)
1 100 Watt Daylight blue basking UVA light (on 12 hours)
3 75 infrared heat bulbs

I had a veiled which needed lower temperatures, and this is what i need to keep the cage at the right temp. I keep it at 95 in 1 basking spot by the UVA bulb, and a cool spot at the bottom at around 78 during the day. At night withe the 3 75 watt heat bulbs keeps the cage at the top at 83 and the bottom at around 70. I live in buffalo, so hopefully I ccan cut some lights out in the summer.

oh yeah, the cage is 48 tall x 44 wide x 28 deep. he normally hangs out in the middle of the cage, and he sleeps close to a heat bulb, probally 7 inches away.

I would think so The temps should be fine with just one basking light and one or two like you have Uvb as they don't produce any heat. Cut out the lights at night because its good for the temps to drop about ten degrees. Especially if the lights are for your new baby panther. Babies can do with lower temperatures.

I would think that you are using too many lights too. I also live right near buffalo new york, I am in cheektowaga. I have kept chameleons for years panthers, veilds and jacksons. I have found that panthers will do just fine with no lights at night during our summer months, and only require the lights at night during the winter months. Hope this helps.

I used to use nightlights for my veiled, then was told not to and still dont use them even in the winter. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and it gets mighty cold here. The heating system in my house sucks, too. It still stays above 60, tho and the chams are all fine.
