Incubation Temp for S. hispidus.

schmidtj Mar 31, 2004 01:54 AM

Hello,
After my S. hispidus are back from hibernation, they are very active since 2 weeks. The females are in perfect conditions and I hope for some eggs this spring. I did not find any breeding information for S. hispidus.
Are there some breeders of this specie that can give me some informations:
How much eggs are they laying?
What nesting place do they prefer? Some of my S.obesus prefer a sandplace between large rocks.
Incubation temperature , incubation time ?
Incubation substrate (Vermiculit : Water , what ratio ?)
Thanks Juergen

How many eggs?: Depends on the size/age of the female. A large older female can lay as many as 35 eggs

Nesting: I use a large Rubbermaid containers with a hole cut in the side. Inside, lightly damp sand is a good substrate.

Incubation: 86° to 89°F will have them hatching in approx. 90 days.

Substate: Vermiculite with a verm:water ratio of .65:1 by weight. Make it easy and weigh 100g or vermiculite and add 65g of water.

Good luck!

Usually weekends are best, but this weekend is the CHS Reptilefest, so I won't be around much. I'll e-mail you and give you my cell phone number. Steve Barten told me that they've found that the stones are directly related to a specific type of salmonella. Did you find some with stones? I've had about six or seven chucks that had them in the past.

HiJuergen
Are you e-mailing from Germany. If so than you probably have some of my offspring.Bj is the only one I am aware of who has incubated and breed hispidus inside.
Mine are bred outdoors in large natural planted pens The smallest clutch has been 13 and the largest 27.
Can't tell you much about incubation because I let mine lay eggs in the pens and let them hatch on there own.
Feed them as much as they will eat in the spring.I believe this plays a big part determining if they will lay eggs are not.
