I've just bought a pair of occellatus

uromastyx Mar 31, 2004 03:14 AM

Hi, I have just bought a pair of wild caught adult U. occellatus. I have left them in the shop for now while I set up my viv and stuff. I was wondering what should I do to be sure they're healthy? I have booked them into the vets to get de-wormed and a general health check. But do I need to do anything else? How can I tell if the ones I ve bought are OK? They seem bright and lively and acting normal (in fact the male was mating with the female constantly!. I already keep ornatus and acanthinurus but I bought captive bred ones of those. The shop was selling the occellatus as Geyri (i think thats how its spelt), but they don't look like geyri and definately look like occellatus, just wondering if there is any chance geyri can have the bright greens, blues and yellows of occellatus?

no they cannot. not unless they are hybrids (which i know some people think is a bad word) but the only way is if they were hybrids...which i doubt.

plus saharans have a very destinctive look, you would know if they looked like a saharan.

hybrids ar possible and have been done.

in fact i know of several places that are trying to get cb hybrids on the side of their other uro breeding projects. to try and make them hardier, or more colorful, or watever for the differing cross.

just my thoughts.

I've been looking around on the internet and they're definately true occellatus! I'm very impressed, they are lovely little things.
Has anyone here had wild caught occellatus? Are they easy to acclimatise?

Congratulations! As adults they are fairly easy keepers. I have had a pair for almost a year and a half, and they are adorable. Do you have the Sudanese or Egyptian type? The Sudanese are small, under 11" and 200 grams, more shy and more colorful. The Egyptians are 1/4-1/3 larger, a little more dull but more laid back. Best of luck with them. BTW, I hope your next ackie intros go much better! Take care.

The one in the picture looks exactly like the species I 've just bought! Is that the Sudanese type? Like I said the shop had the sent as Geyri and was non the wiser when I saw what I thought they were! Is £150 about right, approx $120 the pair?

P.s. what substrate are you using on your picture?

$120 for the pair was an excellent price. I really hate to say, but I paid over 4 times that for mine. I was so excited to get them and nobody else had them, sooooooooo. Oh well, they are really cuties. The one in the picture is a Sudanese. The substrate I am using is millet, in that picture it is the white millet, but I usually buy red. Millet is a bird seed, used by Doug Dix. I have been very happy with it, but it does not allow for creating tunnels. I was more concerned with the impaction problems some people were having. We all have to make a choice for our reptiles, and hopefully we make the right ones. Good luck with your new babies.
