Question about my little Herman.

Smuffin Mar 31, 2004 06:27 AM

I have a c.b. Herman and got her in January 2004.
She weighed 19grms when I got her.
She is now 29 grms. She never refused a meal until yesterday.
She is drinking. I am really worried about her. Is this normal for them to not eat? Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated! Thanks

She never refused a meal until yesterday.

I think you are worrying too much.
A hatchling that has eaten every day for about 3 months and has increased its weight by 50% is doing OK.

One day off is fine. In fact, as it gets older, there will be more days in which it will not want to eat. Just maintain the appropriate heat, hydration, nutrition, etc and it will be OK.

I have a Hermanns 6 months old and I'm new at this.
Be careful on feeding him. Only a certain amount each day with correct mineral additions. I thought I was stingy with the food, I was feeding him a palm size group of various greens each day. Well at 6 months I sent measurements and photos to the breeder who still has his brothers and sisters, well my "buddy" is 1/2 inch larger than the rest. I was feeding him TOO MUCH. Since I feed every other day usually with a very small snack on the off days( which he usually passes on.

He will be outside full time soon in a 8'x6' protected pen with a lock top and there he can be in grass, dirt and various plants growing he can eat. His hunger after a day outside is strong because of alot of movement and exercise which is good!

If yours is inside all the time watch out for food amounts and there is a benchmark on correct size somewhere for each 3 months measuring from the back to the front.
Get an outside pen ready for him because that is the only way to keep a Hermanns happy!

And when you get him outside he will be actively seeking food a good portion of his time awake.
I think you are going to do more harm restricting food unless you also try to slow down the metabolism, which I'm not suggesting at all.

If everything is normal, you are probably witnessing the tortoise regulating it's own needs based on it's environment and food availability. It is only going to take in the food it can process and this is mainly dependent on environmental conditions. (high temperature = high metabolism = high nutrient intake and the opposite is usually true)
