1st time egg layer-question

newagewanda Mar 31, 2004 10:27 AM

I have a female that recently laid her 1st egg and continues to dig. Just wondering if this is normal sine thet usually lay 2 per clutch. She laid her 1st egg last Friday and the nest box is continually dug up. Has anyone ever have this happen w/a 1st time egg layer? Thanks.

It could be that she only had one egg, but if she's still digging, chances are, there's another one on the way. Just try not to disturb her, so that she doesn't freak out and become egg bound if she's still got one egg in her. I had one do that a few days ago...that was actually her 4th or 5th clutch of the season. She laid one egg and then laid the other about 2-3 days later.

Thanks for the reply. I came home from work yesterday and watched her lay the second egg.

almost time every mine lay eggs, she lays them one by one, normally a day or two apart, so she is probably diging in preparation for the next egg.
