how important are crickets if they eat the pellets?

sila Mar 31, 2004 01:08 PM

My babies eat tons of greens and pellets now..Im soo glad they are eating regular but the smaller one will not eat outside her tank.I dont like putting the crickets in there and she doesnt eat many even then just 3 or 4 and I have to drop them one at a time and the little buggers are hard to catch when they are soo small..How important are the crickets if shes eating the repcal pellets..
Another question is about her tail..when I got her I didnt notice that she was missing a bit from the end it doesnt seem to be bothering her and I have kept a close eye on it to see if it swelled or anything and it has stayed the same. Will she always have this now or will it grow back like some lizards?

Repcal is formulated to be a complete diet (although most will also feed other things with it). As long as they are getting salad (dusted) and eating the repcal they should be fine without crickets. If it's just crickets you don't like offer some silkies, or supers (appropriate size) occasionally. The missing part of the tail is called a nip. It's pretty common and no it won't grow back (sorry).

I agree, crix aren't needed if you give pellets and dusted salad. crix do give beardies some exercise though. If you do want to use crix and your BD is small, a small cage makes it easier for them to catch crix in. Short of that, you can disable the crix so they cannot jump making it easier for your BD to catch them. Simply break the knee joint on the crix back leg. or remove the lower part of the leg. Be careful not to yank the rear legs off when doing this. Just squeeze the joint until it pops.

You could try putting the crix in a slick sided bowl or ashtray. They rarely jump out, most just keep trying to climb the sides. They aren't very bright..lol
