The filters are the same. When purchasing a filter to use for turtles, you can't get one too big. They are much dirtier than fish so you want to get one sized for a tank much larger than what you actually have. I don't think many keepers use additives. Filtration and water changes are your best bet.
Fish are good because they will usually eat scraps on the bottom and floating around eliminating food for bacteria.
