What is the breeding longetivity of a female 3 toed?

John D. Mar 31, 2004 03:11 PM

I was just given a 3 toed female that is over 20 years old. It has laid infertile eggs in the past (never been with a male). It has been several years since it has laid eggs, at least none have been found (in its outside pen). At about what age does infertility (no eggs possible) set in? I've seen several diferent total life spans ranging from 7 years to over 80. Depending on which is most accurate it would seem it has way past , or still has many years to go.

no one really knows when/if female boxies go infertile,
if they were to go infertile at age 7.. or die at 7 their species would probly be extict, since some boxies dont reach sexual maturity till their 10 years of age.. 7 isn't really not a logical age for a boxie, I remember reading the oldest box turtle on record was a wild caught/release eastern box turtle aged aprox. 120 years old, he was caught by a man in New Jersey, the man counted it's growth plates and estimated the turtle about 20 years old, marked the turtle and released it, the turtle was found again 100 years later on the mans property, and that turtle probly reproduces to this day.

I can tell you that my 30 year old Eastern Box turtle laid 4 eggs this fall. She hadn't been with a male for years until I mistook a male three toed for a female. They are apart now. I hope she isn't too mad at me.
