Okay, how's this tub size....

Tigergenesis Mar 31, 2004 06:39 PM

Would an adult female western hog do well in a tub size 20x14x6.5? These are the actual measurements inside the tub. Outside measurements are 24x17x6.5

If this is too small, what size should I shoot for?
If too small for a female, is this okay for a male?

Thanks!

although im a novice hog keeper..ive read a bunch...i think that should do fine...as long as horizontally it has the same area as a 15-20 gallon tank it should be fine...just provide lots of aspen...ive only caught my little hog climbing once...and as they are very ungraceful creatures she fell off...hehe...but that size should do...i would be wary when breeding though...better to have a even bigger tub for adult when breeding...but seems like u like ur animals singular...one kenyan...one ball..etc...o ya...congrats on ur conicuses...atleast i think that was u that posted ...adorable guys...well...since ur starting off with an adult...and probably is pretty acclimated to eating f/t mice..etc...im sure u'll have no problems...just make sure ur hand isn't in there when she has mice...cuz unlike a kenyan...if they get a hold of u...they start chewing...and u might even have a slight reaction...anyway...to make the long story short...make sure u provide lotta ventilation...basic husbandry for kenyans will apply to the hog as they are both low humidity burrowing snakes...and both eat vigorously...post some pics of ur hog when u get it...or if u already have it...would love to see her ...oh and what are u gonna call her?...still going with the LOTR theme?

Yep, that was me with the conicus. She and the Saharan are so cool and I'm glad I got them.

I was thinking of getting an adult hog, but now I'm thinking of getting a younger one. It will be kept by itself. I'm not really interested in breeding any of my snakes at this time.

Will definetly post pics when I get one. I'd prefer female, but I just wasn't sure she'd do well in the size rack tubs I have.

I won't be sticking with the LOTR theme. My boids will have the LOTR theme, but my colubrids will have a different theme. I have such a hard time thinking of names for animals I had to go with themes to make it easier. I'm thinking of naming my colubrids after endangered species.

Thanks for the help!

NP!..ur pics are cool...and ur DIY section on ur webpage is awesome...the incubator worked for my friend...altho i haven't tried it myself...i recommended ur site....its a very nice site!!...i persnally got a baby hog simply cuz its rewarding to see ur pet grow...and since ur not in a hurry to breed any of ur snakes...ur not forced to get her to breeding size..therefore u will have a great experience with ur hog...ive only recently got mine...and shes tamer than my dog...never hissed...eats like a pig ...oh..and where are u planning on getting urs?..at a show?...or at a store?..or local breeder etc...

I'm very selective about who I buy my snakes from. I'm currently searching for breeders in my area with any hogs available. There were 2 at the show last weekend, but the guy couldn't seem to tell me much about them (how long he'd had them, about how old, what they were eating, etc). It was like someone just stuck him at a table and said 'here sell this stuff' - not the first person like this I've met at a show. All my sand boas (and any future ball pythons and rosy boas) came from the same breeder - he's great. My Ball Python (first snake) came from a petstore, and my Mexican Black Kingsnake was from a breeder at a show that I talked to for awhile and felt very comfortable with - I almost do a mini interview like session to get a feel for the breeders. I'm buying a corn from my vet, but am still trying to find someone I feel good about buying a hog from. I'm excited about getting one, but I'll wait as long as I have to in order to find one.

well..ive had my share of blech experiences with breeders at shows..no offense to the great and responsible breeders out there...but some breeders there seriously go to herp shows to sell defective animals...wait..that sounds like a object...umm...problematic animals for cheap....i got a pair of high yellow jungle leopards from a guy at a show for 60 bux...*not gonna mention names*...and turns out although when i bought them...the tails were nice and fat and looked like good animals...i had them checked out...and 2/3 of the leopards had internal parasites...if the price is too good to be true..it probably is...however,they are back to good health though....from the stuff i read...which i totally agree..is that a reputable hog breeder HAS TO SHOW U THAT IT FEEDS WELL ON F/T MICE....its a must..especially hogs becausehogs are prone to have feeding problems...no matter how fat it looks...make sure u see it for urself...and even if the snake was just fed like 3 days ago...it will happily take another..and the breeder/store/vendor shouldn't have a problem with proving that....if they have a strict feeding policy then just go there at feeding time...most people recommend just seeing it once...but i personally didn't want to take a chance so i watched it eat in two feedings...a two week waiting period...then i was satisfied and bought the snake...im sure once is enough...but seeing that u are so meticulous in choosing ur snake source....haha u'll prob do the same...but heck it was a long wait...two weeks...my hands were itching to get the snake the first day i saw it...but it was days well waited for ...

Don’t get me wrong on this but it seems to me, to ask a breeder to feed his snake after an 8 or 900 mile trip, temperature changes, lighting changes, and all those hands reaching out to touch you! I would say that you would get a no eater or a regurgitated mouse in the cage! And that can’t be good for sales. Thanks tom

oh sorry...i didn't clarify..i meant feeding if u are by a local breeder or a pet shop...but i know some vendors who do...ive seen them feed it..and they keep a log...and the person who wanted the snake fed signs the log to prove that the vendor didn't just scribble times that the snake fed...i still don't like running the risk of non-eating herps...
