Cape gophers in California?

Rick Mar 31, 2004 07:13 PM

I went out to the Imperial Valley last weekend and was surprised when my son caught this snake. He was hollering something and when I got close enough to hear he asked if there were corns in California. We've collected pacifics and San Diegos in the past but nothing that looked as colorful as this snake. Don't even suggest that it might have escaped from somebody's collection. Not much chance of that where we were. Could it be possibly be a Cape or is there something I missed?

Hey Rick, take a look at some Sonoran Gopher (P. c. affinis) pics. That's what you would be finding out in IV. Some are very colorful from around there, and they don't look like San Diegos either. The bimaris, and especially vertebralis, do not get anywhere near close enough to be found there.
