My Blizzards Situation

Tarentola Mar 31, 2004 08:23 PM

My leo has Coccidia.......................I was going to go to the vet to get some sulfamethazine for him and my dad said lets go check this store called Prairie Farm And Ranch(so livestock store) and we will see what medicine they have.

At the vet.................just to see the lizard cost 53.00$ and we already new what the parisite was,so i got this 500ml bottle of sulfamethazine for 5.62$ canadian.........................at the livestock store.

I gave 75 mg/kg to my leo today so I will tell you how he is doing in the morning. So I hope my leo does better.

p.s my blizzard is over 4 months old and weighs 10 grams

i hope he turns out okay and i hope everything goes well for you and your leo. good luck. remeber if he doesnt get better even though its hard to pay for you should take him to the vet. it may put a strain on your wallet but it'll be worth it in the end good luck again.

how do you know it has cocidia? did you take a samle to the vet for a fecal?? and also where are you getting your dosing instructions? are you using oral or injectable meds? alot of medicines can reek havoc on the renal system so make sure he is plenty hydrated... pedialite will most likely be your best bet....

i would suggest getting a fecal done... alot of the same symptoms as cocidia can also be caysed by internal parasites. take a fresh fecal to the vet to get them to test it usually its only 10-20 dollars you miight be treating your geckos for something she doesnt even have just because she may have some of the symptons does not make it a diagnosis unless a fecal has been done to either rule it out or conclude she does have it. the medication you are giveing her could p[ossibly kill her if not administered right.... in those books they give you a average dosage but dosages sometimes vary between species depeing on their metabolic rate possible resistance to the drug ect. i do not reccomend at all SELF DIANOSIS and SELF MEEDICATING

ya know what if you cant afford or wont take her or your patenes if your younf wong help you take her to a vet... you should not be keeping ANY animal and it looks as through from your signature you have quite alot... animals regardless or mammal or reptile ARE NOT DISPOSABLE.
but chances are you wont take her to a vet try and treat her yourself most likely she will die and then you will go on to the next pet store and yet again purchase another animal.... oh by the way cocidia is contagious and can be transmitted to your other retpiles as well........ in MOST species of reptiles cocidia is FATAL...... so its that nice now your whole collection (if she does have it which you dont know) is at risk..... do yourself a favot when they die dont replace them if you are not willing to give them the proper care.

She is chasing crickets now and vibrating her tail(like she used to when she was healthy)oh yah did I mention that my dad is a livestock vet.............................so he new what parisite it was when he read my books and examined the lizard.

The lizard is doing 90% better then before so the medicine works and he had coccidia.

If you don't have anything nice to post.................don't post then! You already told me I had to consault a vet and I did.

i really could care less if your dad is a brain surgeon......... livestock parasites and reptiles parasite are quite different.
...... i would think that your dad being a vet would chose to make the right decision and take the animal to a more qualified, reptiles vet......i find it hard that if your leo had cocidia and only after a treratment or so is doing better...... cocidia is hard to treat and irradicate. like i said if you arent willing to give th animal proper medical treatment them stop buying and if god fobid your gecko has cocidia you best hope and pray it doesnt spread throughout your whole herp collection and wipe it out... and if it does i wouldnt suggest any replacements under the circumstances

Thats just like a man who is very sick or injured in a hospital and there is a cheap way and a exspensive way and he probaly will die, both affective and the family will go for the cheap way or pull the cord, and I was going to go to a reptile vet but decided I would try it my self and it is paying off.

The vast majority of reptile parasitic and bacterial diseases have the exact same symptoms. Coccidia cannot be diagnosed without a fecal sample taken and inspected under a microscope, and even then it can be elusive if there are no oocysts being shed at that time. Coccidia is very difficult to treat, and requires multiple treatments to eradicate (if it can be eradicated, and proves fatal a large percentage of the time. I honestly doubt that your gecko had coccidia because it would not have 'bounced back' after only one treatment.

I am not being argumentative, but I would like to point out that there is a huge difference in treating livestock and reptiles. Mammalian veterinary practice may provide many solutions that are common to all animals, but reptilian diseases are many times tricky to treat. If you would like a great book on reptile disease, pick up a copy of "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger Klingenberg, DVM. Your father may enjoy it, too.

One more thing... when you post on a public forum, you can expect to have responses. Unfortunately, not all of them will agree, and many will not be agreeable with you. If you do not want input, advise, or the comments of others when you post... then perhaps not posting would be the wisest thing.
