poop question photo of Kermey

BabyStoleMyDingo Mar 31, 2004 10:28 PM

Do dragons have a slight smell to their poop?

When Kermit poo's I can smell it if I'm taking him or the poop out. Yes I take it out as soon as I see it. Its not a strong smell but I can smell it. Is this normal? I know parasites can make feces smell bad, but how do I know if its a normal poop smell or if I should be concerned? (my friend thinks Im being paranoid lol)

Im used to my teeny geckos, that have teeny poops. So I've never smelled lizard poop lol.

His poops look normal & he has a great appetite. He is Alert and lively- especially when he knows he's gonna get his grub on.

So um, is it normal to be able to smell their poo's? LOL

Yes BD poo smells bad and when they have parasites it can smell VERY BAD but not always. it also dedpends on diet. Crix give off more of a smell than pellets and salad.

Thanks Bennett

Ive been trying to get him to eat pellets but so far he's only tried one and spit it out. As for his greens, he isn't too big on them yet. He does eat a few bites here and there but thats about it.

Thanks again

Pellets: Put a large paper plate in the cage and bounce the pellets off it, drop them in one at a time. BDs are attracted by movement. You can also try soaking them in different juices (no sugar added) then bounce them in. Offer the pellets first thing before other foods about an hour after lights on and then again throughout the day. don't starve him if he wont eat them but try for a few days with only offering pellets. You can also feed moisten pellets to the crix about 1 hour before you feed them to your BD. The scent of the pellets will get on them and he may learn to associate the smell.

Dragon poo does smell pretty rank. Even a healthy dragon can have some fairly potent-smelling stuff.

Mainly, it depends on diet for size/shape/smell/etc. Yes, crickets do add to the smell, but only marginally... and actually not as much as certain greens do. Mustard and Dandelion greens, when digested, are very, very smelly. Collard, Watercress, Kale, and Chard aren't *as* smelly, but they aren't wonderfully aromatic either.

Also remember... the more moisture in the food your dragon eats, the wetter it's going to be. Just because it's a little moist or runny, doesn't mean your dragon is sick. High-moisture salad, worms (silk, butter), and regularity of baths/mistings all increase this.

The best thing to do is just grin and bear it. If the smell is really bad, get some pet-friendly air sanitizer (such as NeutraAir) and spray a very, very small amount in the room, away from the enclosures, or in the bag you throw the waste in.
