Should I be worried about impaction with....

oogieboogie Mar 31, 2004 10:48 PM

I have my pacmen on a substrate mix of topsoil and ground up peat moss. Im slightly concered about the substrate they intake when i feed them. When they get worms and superworms they tend to get some substrate in their mouths and it seems as it goes down the hatch just like the worms....

How much concern should I have?

with a fine substrate like you are using it sould easily pass through but if you are really concerned put the food on some sort of rock, dish, or feeding tray. This will help reduce the amount of substrate ingested.

Just make sure that it isn't fertilizer-treated topsiol.
I'd offer the food on an overturned saucer, or something of that nature, to prevent ingestion of the subatrate. It probably isn't harmful if ingested in small amounts, but I would not want to risk impaction no matter how remote the chance. I have tried feeding my horned frog on a piece of clear plexiglass, and it has worked great. No substrate swallowing at all.
