Quarentine. Jiffy, Mr.D other rescues

PHFaust Feb 10, 2003 11:26 AM

Ok since I cant remember, might as well as here....

I never take rescues into my home. Well I never did. I was told that there was a previous mite infestation on one of the iguanas. I currently have everyone quarentined in the bathroom in separate enclosures. What is the gestation of the mite eggs? All other health is good. We have a bit of nose rub for sarsippus (who is staying) but for the life of me I cant remember the egg gestation of mites and well since apparently the girl who calls in sick 20 times a year called in sick AGAIN i gotta get my butt into work. I was planning 30 days, but cant remember if that will be good enough or not.

BTW here is one of the adoptables. YES HE IS THAT SMALL!!! He is 1 year old and has already had 3 homes. No wonder he is a bit testy. Both of the little ones are full of piss and vinegar and need SEVERE nail trimmings. This is grumpy. Dont have a pic of spazz yet since i cant find my digi cam. But I do have a disposable camera that has pics of me in my wedding dress that i need to get developed so will have pics of him soon.

I'd have to go look it up but I want to say 14-21 days. Part of the problem is that if you know that they came in they will most likely progress to everyone sooner or later. Clean everything super well anyway as it will help minimize contamination. Even then you're most lilkely going to miss a few eggs on a lizard somewhere and all of your work will be for nothing.

As far as eradication, I've actually had pretty good luck using Hypoaspis predatory mites. Yeah, you have extra creepy crawlies around for a week or so but they really did seem to do the trick when I needed them. 1000% better than having to tear down all of the enclosures. Biconet.com carries them under their "beneficial insects" heading I believe. Better to get them going now before you havea fullblown outbreak because they eventually WILL find their way to everyone in your place.....

I DID hear some rumblings of some kind of fogger or spray that was actually reptile friendly but have lost track of it. Something like "Reptile Relief" for a name. Maybe a search ???

Hi Cindy,

I would try the no-pest sticky strips. Put one is an
inconspicous place and they are known to work great. I
have read this in many articles. When I adopted Beanie
I found mites and my vet gave me a Ivermectin med to add
to a spray bottle of water. Her case was not severe so
after 1 cleaning of her cage and a spray, she was clear.
If I noticed more mites the vet told me to repeat in
I believe it was 14 days.

Grumpy was at Dane County. The same place I adopted
Beanie from

Hope this helps

Linda
