question about some eggs layed tonight

restlesswind444 Mar 31, 2004 11:43 PM

i have 2 females that are currently being housed together. fiona layed her last clutch on 3-17, cassidy laid her last clutch on 3-25...so tonight i go in there and theres 2 eggs, one was fertile and one was infertile. cassidy, the one who laid less than a week ago looks skinny like she just would've laid 2 eggs...but its only been 6 days!!!! is this even possible? is that why she only laid one fertile one? if so then it has to be very depleting for her reserves...how can i slow her down?
thanks for ur help,
chris

Last year I had one girl lay 4 full sized eggs over the period of two days. If I remember correctly, she laid one more clutch after that, and then she was done for the season. I’ve found it hard to tell for sure if freshly laid eggs are infertile. Sometimes the veins aren’t visible (candling) until a week into incubation, other times it’s obvious right away. What led you to believe one was good and the other was not?

one was all floppy and only half filled the other is fully inflated like all my other fertile ones and turns orangish instead of yellow when candled

Yep that would make me think it’s infertile also. You might want to try incubating it, just incase. If you do, burry it in your incubation medium, or place a moist paper towel over it. This may help it to plump back up. Either way, best of luck with your good egg!
