Live moss?

lizzylizard Apr 01, 2004 01:42 AM

Has anyone tried using actual live green moss (the velvetly kind) in their humid hide? Just wondering, I think it would be a nice looking substrate. It can also be so soft and would retain moisture really well. I'm just not sure about were to get some that would be 100% clean from parasites, bugs...

You could use live moss, but it would eventually die and very easily. The humid hide would probably be too dark and not let the moss get any light that it specifically needs (Full spectrum lighting from a special source, usually the sun). If you would like to try it, go ahead and just post your results afterwards, just make sure it is not ingestible! And if this and all else fails, just use bed-a-beast or eco earth (ground coconut fibers).

I dont have exsperience with the live moss but I wouldnt suggest it because parasite arent the only thing you have to worry about when putting live plants in a enclosure.. PESTICIDE are also very dangerous and deadly and you never realy know if the plants have been sprayed or not. Spagnum/orchid moss would work just fine and keeps mosisture pretty well for the humid hide.

I have a UVH light in there and a bit of the light gets into the humid hide. I just asked some of the guys with frogs where they got theirs. If I can find some clean stuff (no pesticides) I'll give it a try, if not I'm sticking to paper towel. Thanks for your info,

You can use the moss they sell at pet stores in the big bags as long as it is sold damp the spores on the moss will make it grow again

It's sites like that that make me want to set up a vivarium and get some little dart frogs. Just amazing!!! I don't know if that "java moss" is the type of moss I want because there are no pictures. I saw lots of kinds I would like on the slide show on that site.

Sorry I took so long to reply, I didn't see your post
