How to go about breeding for money?

InsideOutsider13 Apr 01, 2004 05:14 AM

What do you need to do in order to be able to sell your geckos to stores. I currently have a breeding pair and the female is laying like crazy! She just laid two more eggs and there is already one in the incubator that should be hatching soon (its swollen to about twice its normal size). Because I will be getting so many hatchlings out of these breeding seasons, I won't be able to just go and keep selling them to friends or people in my area, so what can I do? Is there a special permit that you can get so you can sell them to pet stores? How could I make money off of this breeding? Thanks for any help that you can provide!

This is just a suggestion. If I became overwhelmed with geckos I would go to a reptile petstore and make some trades for neither other more exspencive animals or supply's. I dont think you need a license to sell to a petstore I wheel and deal with my petstore all the time. Most pet stores wont buy animals especially like geckos unless its in a decent size number because they want the wholesale price they like to give "Store credit". Personally I havent been in geckos that long only a few months and I already have 17 and 2 eggs in the incubator and another gravid female. Geckos are addictive!!! I dont think I could ever realy have enough until I got like 50 then id have to slim down some BUT out of my 17, 9 are babies, 5 sub-adult, and a adult trio so they dont take that much space..Im getting ready to build a rack when I get more breeders. If all you have is a pair of leopard and 3 eggs so far thats not that many geckos in my opinion and you may get 3-5 more clutchs soo altogether 7-10babies give or take. If you dont want that many cool then you should keep your pair seperate from now on.

Sometimes I wonder if breeding for the money is what people should really be doing. I think that if you like your animals, and want to breed them, then breed them for the love of the animals. I've only ever sold one gecko and it was to someone that wanted to breed them to another. The others, I either kept, or gave to people who didn't know how to get them, or for a school(High School).

>>Breeding for money is the right way to do it.I do love geckos,But if you're spending money on taking care of them and breeding them why not sell those people want to have as pets. Either they gona get them from a petstore for an arm and a leg for a sick one.Or they can buy a healthy one for u.You're really helping gecko owners out.I wont give out my geckos for free. That's dum,why waste my time breeding them then ? For that i'll separate males from females and allow no breeding to go on.Theirs millions of people who breed animals and sell them to put food on their kid's plates. You can have fun but u can get money while u havin fun !~@

All of the above advice sounds good, but be prepared to get pennies on the dollar for whatever you sell. Most pet stores won't buy from individual breeders, it's not worth the hassle. When they buy from their distributors, if there's a sick or dead animal, there's no fuss. The store calls up the dist. and are sent new ones, no questions asked. With the limited resources most breeders have, that's not nearly as easy to do.

I say all of that only from experience w/ other animals. I have a breeding pair of chinchillas and have alreday went to some pet stores trying to secure some business for the babies due.

Good luck!
