Should I worry?

shaon94 Apr 01, 2004 07:51 AM

My anole has really slowed down on her intake of food. She only eats 1-2 crickets a night now and only really seems interested about one or two times a week. (she is even turning down mealworms and she is nicknamed the mealworm junkie)

Now she is not by any means starving or malnurished she looks to be in perfect health. She runs around, basks, drinks water, etc. but I worry due to the fact she used to eat at least 3 if not 4-5 crickets every night(and a mealworm if she was lucky). Is it that she has just matured and does not eat as much or should I run her off to the vet? One other thing to keep in mind is she is no longer laying eggs. Any input would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Some Anoles, particularly wild-caught ones, slow their food intake during what they preceive as "winter". Anoles don't hibernate even in the northernmost parts of their range but they do slow their activities and food intake.
It is also not unusual for them to change their food preferences from time to time as well. That is one reason to provide a varied diet rather than the same prey items every day.

Hello Shaon and Atrax:
It is possible that now that the Anole has been feeding heavily for a wshile it is maintaining and doesn't need as much food for a major meal. Cut back on the food a couple days a week and you'll probably find the food intake goes up on feeding days.
Have a Great Day!!!
