Blacktail eggs...

oldherper Apr 01, 2004 08:38 AM

My female (of course) Blacktail laid 12 eggs yesterday. They don't look great...not as white as I'd like and not really uniform in size and shape. Some may be slugs, but at least she didn't bind. They do have the "pebbled" texture that you would expect in good Drymarchon eggs, so I am incubating them anyway. I hope it's not a sign of things to come...my rubidus still has not laid, although she still appears to have eggs..she is tearing her cage apart now. Maybe she'll settle down under the sphagnum and lay in the next day or so. She's driving me crazy. I hate this part....almost as much as the 3 month wait for them to hatch. If she doesn't lay in the next 2 or 3 days, I'm going to take her to the vet for ultrasound. I'm worried about her...she hasn't eaten in a while and she's losing body weight (they always do and it always worries me). Sometimes I wonder if breeding is worth the stress on me and the animals.

OH,
Good luck with the eggs. You shouldn’t have any problems finding homes for those little racers. If your eggs are good? I would want to keep them all

My male is two years older than the female. He ready She’s not. It’s that little under nourished girl you helped with. She is growing fast and healthly W/attitude.

I think the black tail makes a great addition and a good starter Dry. That was my first introduction to the Dry family. No regrets here. My male personally is much calmer than the females. She is a tail rattler and likes to posture.

Is this your females first year? Also, was she at 6’?

Hi Dan!

Both the male and female were wild-caught adults that I picked up for a song and a dance at a show in Tampa a couple of years ago. I think I paid $50.00 for the pair. They were both just chock-full of a variety of parasites and pretty scarred-up. It took me 3 months to get the female to eat and about 2 months to get the male to eat. I had to tube feed both of them several times with a mix of Jump-Start, Hill's A/D and Pedialyte to keep them from dehydrating. It took me about 6 months to get the parasites under control. I was doing fecal floats every 3 weeks. Now they eat like pigs and the scars are mostly shed away. They are both about 6 1/2 feet long. I'm not sure if it's her first breeding or not....
