I lost my gecko today..

OhioGeckos Apr 01, 2004 09:28 AM

Hi,
This is my first time ever posting on kingsnake. But I am so distraught right now that I feel I need to speak my mind. A few months back I purchases some Bibron Geckos. I know they are not the most heardy of all species, but there's no reason I should be losing them like this. 1 of the females I had purchased was gasping for air, unfortunately she did not make it for even a month. My other female seems to be thriving, but the male I got shortly became just as sick as my female. Although me and my vet found parasites w/in him and had begun treatments a few days ago (today would've been his last day), I found him dead in the same fashion as my female... face down in water. No one should ever have to go thru what I've been thru the last 3 months. Starting breeding when you have seemingly so many errors is not an easy thing to do. If I didn't love these animals so much I wouldn't worry about them constantly, and read as much as I do. Point of my story, don't buy something that's a WC baby, and don't buy from big money petstores. They may be good w/ mammals and birds (if they even are) but when i comes to reptiles, all they do is dumb em in a cage, throw some crickets in and don't feed em til all the crickets are gone (which of course usually never happens, none of my geckos ever finish all their crickets and I remove them so they don't get overly stressed). I pray that this female will strive and live on, and hopefully I can get a boy that someone captively bred. She looks so sad it's unbearable.

Losing geckos whose welfare you have slaved over is hard. Just out of curiousity, how are you keeping them? What size tank, subtrate, temps, etc. I don't have massive amounts of experience with P. turneri, but the ones I keep have been some of my most healthy geckos ever. I received mine from an importer in December, and my only problem with them now is that they are obese. You may very well have gotten a sick lot of geckos, but let's go over husbandry and make sure everything is ideal for them. Mine came in with a heavy parasite load, but it never seemed to affect them in the least, before, during, or after treatment. Good luck with the remaining female.

I agree, P. turneri are among the hardiest geckos at all and its very difficult to kill a parasite free specimen by inappropriate housing conditions
