Tortoises and Ledges... (pic)...

EJ Apr 01, 2004 10:30 AM

I've seen this with a few different species so I've actually provided structure where ever possible.
This is something I didn't expect. The rock was provided as a visual barrier.

This RF climbed to the top... looked around and down... and then turned around on the top of that rock...

and returned the way he came up.
I've seen other tortoises look over the edge of a ledge and seem to think 'I can do this... no problem.' and dive off.

Pretty interesting Ed. I wonder if this means that this guy has better reasoning power or that he's a just a big chicken!! all of mine are the "take the plunge!!" type.

... do you mean other *individual* torts, or different species?

my own redfoot baby seems pretty smart about ledges. every morning i feed him on this pub table we have in our kitchen, and while he does show unusual interest in the edge at times, he's never gone over the edge (NOTE: i *do* keep a very good eye on him just in case, because i know that he can't be trusted regradless!). however, if he's peering over the edge and i then place the palm of my hand parallel with it, he'll crawl right out onto my hand, which to me inforces that he does know what the "cliff edge" is.

Just about every species I have if given the opportunity will climb to the top of structure to explore and sometimes hang out.
