Sisters fighting, what to do...

clickman Apr 01, 2004 08:21 PM

I'm fairly shaken after what just happened. I've been in a bit of disarray for the past few days. My two females, both a little over one year, hadn't eaten since Tuesday night. I gave them a big meal tonight... I noticed the smaller one was shedding. ("Smaller" in that she has a shorter, regenerated tail) So I made sure to extra-spray the humid hide, etc. I put the bowl in, and they both slowly crept towards it. My larger, and calmer one, Chomps, had one foot on the dish. (It's a plastic yogurt lid) No sign of dominance. Chomps then sort of moved off to the side a little, then Vienna bit poor Chomps right in the leg. She held on for maybe three seconds max, then let go. I sort of panicked, and was amazed that Chomps didn't drop her tail. I grabbed the first thing I could, a half log, to try and create a makeshift barrier between them while I thought. Whenever I raised it they both sort of put eachothers heads close as if what to me seemed like preparing to strike.

I really quickly threw some paper towels down on a 10 gallon right below, and took our my poor Chomps and put her in there. I used what I could to provide a cage layout. Brought down a bigger hide and put into a corner and then positioned a 15w night light (All I had) over it. It gets the temperatures to the minimum suggested, so I'm going to try to get something better tomorrow. Also threw in a dish with some waxworms and such, because I feel so bad for her. I can't see any physical damage or bleeding or anything. Should I still be worried? Well, I am, but, do I have a reason to be worried?

They've been together since "birth" as far as I know, they're clutchmates. (I adopted them at 6 months, they were pet store seizures) I never saw any dominance display. This was a first. Do you think this just could be a one time stress thing? Previously they've handled food VERY well, no aggression. I'm thinking maybe Vienna, the one who bit, did so because of the stress from shedding and not eating for a while, etc) Should I try after a few days to re-introduce, see if there's any aggression? I'm very worried

Well It could be just like humans if you live with someone see them all day everyday you get tired of them for a while they were both hungry and both went for the food. I would try to reintroduce them in a day or so. Just monitor them closely. Also, a suggestion would be 2 seperate bowls with worms on each side of the enclosure or a longer bowl so they can both eat without being on top of each other. There should be a hide for each gecko or a large enough one that they can both fit comfortably.. A hide can be made easily with just about any kind of container disinfected with a hole in the top of side and some moist moss. Even a 2 story hide if you want to be creative/dual chamber. You do have the cage space to keep them seperate so that wouldnt hurt to keep them just where they are.. I know I need my space and cant handle someone around me 24-7-365.
