Female Tiger Salamander not eating

Canadian_Gurl6 Apr 01, 2004 11:10 PM

Hey guys

i have a tiger salamander that i have had for three years now and she has been doing fine up until now. I am somewhat worried about her, about a month ago she began to molt like usual, with her skin turning darker, but this time it turned black and stayed that way for about a month. Just now she is beginning to shed the black skin from last month. Yesterday when i was feeding her and my other salamander, i noticed a bump under her skin, the same color, about the size of the 'o' typed here. We do not have a bubble maker thing in her tank, in fact the water is fairly stationery unless she moves around. This brings the not eating part of the question. As i said, i tried to feed her yesterday and now again today. She has nt eaten and only made one very pathetic attempt to open her mouth and catch her mealworm. Usualy she always eats her share and begs for more. My other salamander is completely normal. Any replies to this will be greatly appreciated!!

Ps. My mom has brought up that it may be a breeding habit to not eat around this time. Also she is still rather active, is this normal for breeding season? My other salamander is a male.

If it's a tiger salamander you need to house it terrestrially, not aquatic. Keeping them in water is dangerous and could be the reason his skin is going black. I would suggest moving them to a proper setup. Also for food, I would recommend using earthworms instead of mealworms,a s it's healthier for them.

They do tend to eat less when the weather is cooler.

Please read the caresheets that can be found at www.caudata.org/cc/ to better understand what they require.
