a death in the family....

iluvblackfrancis Jun 13, 2003 12:00 AM

bad luck has sticken, or good luck, depending how you look at it. the gecko i had suspected of crypto, died just few hours before my appointment with the 2nd vet. the only reason this could be good, is if it did have crypto, maybe there is still a chance none of my other herps got it. im still sad about it, but i will move on, ive learned a lesson too. i will never buy from them again.

You should get a necropsy.

i asked about an autopsy and they said they didn't do it. maybe autopsy was the wrong word. so i already dispossed of it. i asked if i should bring in a diff gecko, and see if it caught it. they said just keep a close eye on it, and if anything happens, then call them.

That's too bad. A post mortem diagnosis could possibly have helped your other gecko. Good luck with your other gecko.

thanks im really scared though. how long does it take for signs of "crypto" to show? cos' none of my other geckos or snakes are acting any different.

Crypto can take three weeks or much longer to start showing symptoms. Here are some links on it.

As far as I know, crypto can only be diagnosed via necropsy. Have you had fecal exams on your other gecko(s) to rule out any other parasites? I wish you good luck.

The sites are BEST right NOW you need to clean everything with ~10% ammonia (bleach is NOT optimal) 30min set and then baking 350-400 45min that means scales, thermometers, cleaning equipment, food items. Preferably throw away anything that came into contact with the gecko. the oocyst can live ~18months in moist enviro I think.
