It's an Irian Jayan local specimen..........

cuora-ca Apr 02, 2004 10:56 AM

How do you figure its an irian jaya? I have 6 irian jayas and they don't look anything like this one. The head, body and tail shapes are all different.

...that he meant that it came from Irian Jaya because it does NOT look anything like any Irian Jaya BTS I have ever seen. The animal in the picture is definitely T. gigas, although I can't be sure about the subspecies. Incidentally, T. gigas comes from a number of islands, including Irian Jaya, but unless you have reliable collection information, there is no way to be certain whether it came from that particular island.

Irian Jaya!??...I think not...I've got one and it looks nothing like that!...It really doesn't look like anything I've seen...Nice looking indeed though!

i wholeheartedly agree with edward...this is definetely a kei island blue tongued skink...if you don't mind me asking, how much did he/she cost???

cuora-ca Apr 02, 2004 04:53 PM

I looked at some pictures and ya it really does look like that ssp. I foudn him in a normal general pet store. It came in with a group of regular looking gigas, and with one that I got with lacks red pigment. I pay a whole 150$ CAN for him. I also have a gigas gigas which has been impregnated by him. Can't wait to see what the babies look like.

I will post pics of Kei Island Skinks.......Most of the specimens that have been coming in that are describe as "Gigas" Are NOT from New Guinea or Irian Jaya. Theproblem is that actual localities of many skinks is vague at best because many ofhe specimens are mixed at the exporters.....They could care less. Currently many T. Gigas babies are being exported as T. Scincoides to circumvent the appendix III laws applied by some countrys. The reason I suggested Irian Jayan was that we imported these during the mid to late 80's. Many specimens that were known to come out of Irian Jaya were smaller than Gigas when sexually mature and had an almost completely yellow dorsum. Again even this distinction is vague since Irian Jaya is simply the other half of New Guinea. Most collectors that were not in the business at that time are not familiar with this form since they have not come in for many years. True "Kei Island skinks" are very difficult to obtain due to the locality in the wild. I've yet to see a Kei Island specimen that sold for anywhere near the going rate of Gigas even at the high end ..... Kei Island specimens sell for more and are difficult to obtain due to the amount of time and travel the collectors have to put in to collect them. Not impossible but, unlikely that it's a KEI Island. We were one of the first facilities in the U.S. to breed blue tongues so I do have some idea what I'm talking about. We still produce 50-80 babies per year of several species/morphs. This by no means however, makes me 100% correct just and educated guess. Just trying to help. Thanks..Ray G. HBR
