OT. What cameras are some of you using to take such great detailed pics of your dragons?

mATTMAN Apr 02, 2004 08:37 AM

Hello. I'm in the market for another digital camera. Looking for a 3-4 mega pixel camera. I personally cannot afford a 5 mega pixel 450 dollar camera at this time nor need a camera like that either for what I will be using it for. I'm currently looking at Nikon, Fuji, or Olympus. I was just wondering if you could post a pic using the digital camera you use just to give an idea of the quality of the pictures you get from it? It does not have to be one of the name brands I've mentioned above. Those are just brands that I'm leaning towards after some research I have done. So please share pics of your Dragons, and the camera it was taken with. This would be a huge help. I will have babies soon, and think I need a step up from the Canon Powershot A40 2.0 I have been using for the longest time. The Canon takes great pics for everyday point and shoot use, but I'm looking for a camera that will improve the detail in close ups, as well as clearer pics overall. Thanks for the help, and any pics you are willing to share no matter the brand your camera is.

Oh yeah Lisa I remember going over, and over all those pics you took trying to figure out the best settings to get nice detailed pics You sure have come a long way with that camera hun!!! You advertisements look so professional too by the way. I've been meaning to tell you how much I like how you have set that up with the nice white blending into the pics. Really good job and it really makes your ads stand out amongst others

almost all my pics are done with olympus e-20 (not in the price range you mentioned). some of the less espensive olympus cameras take pictures that are just as nice but with fewer options. I like olympus.

My son and daughter both shoot with nikon 2000 (under $200) You can get the 4MP (4300) camera for about $300.

Whatever camera you get, make sure you get fast media so that you dont miss those cute pics waiting for the file to save.
Try B&H photo in NY, they are reliable and have good prices.

Hey Mattman, there is a site www.dpreview.com they are an independent group that reviews everything digital. You can line up 3 or 4 cameras and compare all the specs side by side, excellent reviews of them also. I personally use a Kodak14n for most of my stuff (a little out of the price range you said) but in that range I love the fuji4900z. With fuji you get all the bells and whistles without the price tag to go with it. Just my opinion.

I personally use a Kodak14n for most of my stuff (a little out of the price range you said)

A little? That retails about 5 grand or so right now yeah? But I bet it's worth it for the full size 35mm sensor

Personally I shoot with a Nikon D100 Digital SLR. This one is another slightly out of the price range initially mentioned. This one retails for about $1500 right now, but with the D70 having been just released, this is probably going to drop rather soon.

Here's a few samples of pics I've taken with it...

First up is a King Cobra. I took a photo of this girl about 3 days after I got the camera, still wasn't quite used to all its functions and the lighting at the time was rather crappy - Taken with the Nikon Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-G lens.

This one is Drei, one of our German imports. He was out basking in the sun, and when a biggish bird flew overhead he got a little annoyed. This was taken with the Nikon Nikkor 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 AF lens.

And here's one of my creamsicle corn snakes. This is just a young guy, he's about 30" long. This is an extreme close-up taken with the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 MF Macro lens.

Gotta love those Nikkor lenses. Nice pics. The D100 is a great camera, probably the best CCD out there for the money. I haven't played with the D70 yet, but it's suppose to be under $1000 on a 6 megapixel CMOS chip (nikons answer to canons d30).

Yup, but only just under $1,000.

Everywhere I see it online is $999+Shipping. Locally, it's $999+Tax.

Personally, I'd rather go with a used D100 over a new D70 (for about the same amount of money) any day.

The D70 has no vertical grip option (unlike the D100 which can take advantage of the vertical shutter, longer battery life, etc. that comes with having an MB-D100), apparently there's a lot of moiré problems with the D70 on certain lenses in some conditions because of the sharpening they've added to the sensor (or something like that, lol).

And you're right, Nikkor lenses are just the best huh? (still saving for that 80-400mm VR, lol).

on www.compgeeks.com Parallel port and then a usb port starting at $15.95, wireless starting at $50. We have several of the them.

The cheap parallel port one, is the one we have been running for for two years on the babies tanks, for people to pick out their dragons and then see/watch them til they are shipped. I also use them on the dragons that we need to watch during the day while I am at work, like gravid or the rescues on meds. I just load up the page on my computer at work and check on them

though I don't have any way to post picks right now, have you tried going into macro mode? There are instructions with the book that tell you how. It gives much better detail than point and shoot.... You may already know this and not be satisfied with the outcome just thought I'd mention it. Tracey Benson at Traceys beardies uses an A40 as well and she takes some great pics (although some of the ones I've seen on here really are outstanding!!) Also I seen I believe in the best buy flier a couple weeks ago there was one of the computer companies offering a 5 megapixel camera with photo printer for underm 300 bucks.... can't remeber which one and don't know if it would be compatible with your setup or not just a thought.....
Good luck and can't wait to see some of those babies!!! Don't forget to put me on the list if you have one!

Robert Wood

you can probably get a nice used one for $100-$200. I switched to the Coolpix 5700 a couple years back. I was pleased with the 900 and would recommend it over and over again. I built my snake website with all pics from that. Unfortunately the snakes are now gone and so is the site, but here is one shot from it. Color is great, closeups are great and its very easy to use.

Yeah I do the same thing with the macro mode!! Why does it need the macro mode on for such far distance pictures!! I'm really new to cameras to begin with, but isn't the macro mode for taking pics of like flowers or a bug on a flower like really close up?? Seems with the A40 I need it to get a clear pic at all distances... With the a40 if I take a pic without the macro mode on it comes blurry even when I use a friends tripod so it's not body shake. It's just the camera.

I think it's either 2 or 3 megapixel and it takes okay pictures. It cost me around $200-300. Can't remember the exact price, but I bought it from amazon. Here are some pics I took. The light was pretty bad in a couple of these pictures, but the camera takes okay closeups. Hopefully I'll upgrade one day when I have money.

The light was kinda crappy buuuuut yeah.

Newly hatched baby.

Crested gecko.

Baby coming out..this one's blurry.. but it's so cute I had to post it!

rossy

anyways I'll stop flooding you with pictures. Good luck finding a camera.
