Purchasing wild-caught Yellowfoot tortoise

Passport Apr 02, 2004 08:48 AM

Only contemplating at this point but wanted input as to pro's and con's of purchasing recently imported Yellowfoot tortoises. I am looking to add to my collection adults ready to breed. I understand about parasites, treatment, and quarantine. In addition to this have any of you had positive experience or negative experience? Noneating? Viral disease? Inability to adjust? Brutality? Shyness? I'm not looking for someone to tell me "yes" or "no" but instead want to read about your experience. Thanks, a bunch.

This falls under the heading of risk/benefit assesment.
I just lost most of my leopard tortoise colony because I took in this adoption. It was quarentened for 2 months and it was captive raised. It took 3 years for the disease to manifest itself. I lost the breeder male, 2 breeder females (25 pounds each that I had for 23 years), a juvenile female that was doing wonderfully and I've got 2 that are barely hanging on. It's cost me over 2000.00 in diagnostics and I still don't know what the problem was but I'm suspecting entameoba. That's my one experience and I've got others. I will no longer add to a group unless there is no choice.

I purchased a 1.2 group of yellowfoots this summer, they were all around 12-13" and fresh imports, they had been in the U.S. for 3 weeks when i got them, one female was very heavy and would not feed at all, she got worse, come to find out she became egg bound and then she died, another female had a very light body weight, but would only take a piece of canalope, i took her to the vet, she got a blood clot while at the vet and died, the male to this day is doing amazing, he had good body weight when i got him eats great, make sure you get them treated well even if the importer says they have been treated, it usually isn't good enough, i just ordered a fresh imported red-foot and i get him wed, this is the first time since the yellow-foot disaster i have ordered a fresh import, just my experince
