None Hibernating torts?

purduecg Apr 02, 2004 09:42 AM

Hello everyone!

I am interested in getting a tort but am curious if any of the smaller breeds do not have to hibernate? My parents have a Sulcata, but I really do not have the space for such an animal, plus I will eventually get her and I really will not have space for TWO of them! lol.

Any suggestions?

Elizabeth

No tortoise needs to hibernate. If you let the environmental conditions become unfavorable to where the tortoise is forced into hibernation you might have a problem if you don't let it but if you keep the conditions favorable to survival you shouldn't have a problem with any species.
Russians and Greeks are good tortoises that do just fine without hibernation.

Thank you Ed!

About a year ago I was on this forum and there was discussion of hibernating the torts, and I just couldn't bear the thought of sticking my pet in the Crisper of my fridge for 3 months. I know how good I am at keeping FOOD healthy in the fridge (not very), and applying the vision of gross mustard greens to a pet was terrifying!

Since they do not HAVE to hibernate it may be time for me to get my own tort. Yahhh!

Thanks Again!
Elizabeth
