Breeding size..

lbrat Apr 02, 2004 12:44 PM

This morning I put my pair of corns together in a 20 gal. long tank so I could clean their individual 10 gal. tanks.
After about 15 minutes,I go to get them back out to put in the 10's and see that they are hooked-up.Problem is,I was not going to breed them until next year after they had gained some size.
They are both around 27"-30" and had a few weeks in the winter around 60 degrees and no feed.
Do you think my male was fertile? Is my female too small to carry, and deliver eggs?I might add that they are around 2 years old,and both 4 way hets.from J.Y.

Well since its kind of slow on here I'm going to take a stab at this one. Get ready to be blasted. Not by me but I'm sure others are going to let you have it. First, corns can and will breed at two years old, especially this time of year. A male and female should never be placed together unless you plan to have hatchlings. That being said, there is a good chance your female might be gravid. Start planning what you are going to do now. prepare a laying box and hope for the best. Weight and girth are more important than length in determining breeding age. Most people say a female should be 250 - 300 grams before breeding. If you snake is smaller than this it could cause some serious problems, egg binding probably the most serious. Hopefully she will lay a small clutch and you wont have any problems. You need to start now researching what to do in case she does egg bind so you will be prepared. If all goes well you will have a small cluth with a variety of morphs. Keep a close eye on her and keep us posted.

Getting prepared is no problam.I have an incubator, shpagnum moss for a laying box and everything else I may need including a very good herp. vet. who is just minutes away should I need him.I will boost her feedings and hope for the best.

What a dilemma. I would just hope that she did not get gravid. that's about all you can do other than maybe boost her feeding a little. 27-30 inches is not long enough and usually that means they are no where near breeding weight. They should be at least 36 inches and 300 grams(some say 250 but i think that is stretching it)for the female but males will breed any time they are willing and that could be at a year old or 3 years, it just depends on the male. The male is probably fertile but hopefully the female is not ovulating or if she is, not going to retain sperm.

Keep an eye on her and palpate in a week or two to see if she has eggs developing. Aslo reading up on eggbinding and its treatments will be helpful as well, Good Luck
