flying friut flies...dang it!

leif Apr 02, 2004 01:35 PM

Hi again!

I'v been doing very well with my FF cultures so far. I start two a week. Today the two I started two weeks ago was teeming with flies, and it's time to start two more.

Well, when I opened the lid to the first one, instead of the flies just falling out as usual they started flying around the room! The second one had some fliers, but not as bad as the 1st it seemed.

My question is, will these flies eventually lose the ability to fly again? Can I still use them to start other cultures or is that particular line ruined? Not all my cultures are from the same source so hopefully the others are okay.

Thanks!

It's my understanding that the flightless variants of Drosophila carry recessive genes, rendering them flightless, however when a flightless FF is coupled with another specimen with even one dominant flying gene, it is inherent that at least 3/4 of the offspring will be able to fly, and this will carry on in to the F2 generation etc, with the dominant genes taking over. I'm no expert, but I would suggest starting over, and tossing the cultures in question.
