A genetics question

dragonlovers Apr 02, 2004 04:49 PM

Does anyone know of a good website that talks about the genetics of breeding beardies? I'm interested in learning about the ratio of color morphs, etc. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.

If you find any long term studies let me know too. the problem is if you have a pair of BDs that produce 40 babies it's hard to keep trak of all of them for one year minimum. They may start out all the same but they change over time. Some normals get colors come in and some colorful ones have colors fade out. Some grow slow and BAM growth spurt passing all the ones that took off and then stopped at 6 months. Husbandry has a lot to do with it so you have to maintain all the babies in the same conditions.

All of this is hard to do with just 40 babies, just imagine doing it for several hundred over a period of years to get a somewhat acurate figure.

My rule of thumb for color (some other breeders have confirmed similar non-scientific guestimates) is 25% good looking babies 50% nice looking babies and 25% normal looking babies. This year I held back and kept a large percentage to get a better idea and many of the 25% normals colored up in their 6th & 7th month. Some of the parents did not color up until they were a year old.

Even though I breed Orange parents that are good bloodlines with orange bloodlines, there are still the occational yellows and greens... Sorry no guess on those but the numbers are small
