Mexican Black Kingsnake With White on belly

reptilicus81 Apr 02, 2004 05:42 PM

My boyfriend just bought a 2-3 foot mex black kingsnake today. I was reading online that they should lose the whitish speckling on the belly as they age, but the guy at the reptile store told us it was just the opposite, they gain white speckling as they age. Is this true? Is a mex black kingsnake ever solid black with out any speckling?

Although some MBK will look identical to splendida as hatchling, they should lose 99% of the yellow color as adults. Even the most yellow hatchlings should only have a hint of yellow on the anal plate and under the chin......some will even have a red anal plate as adults. I think the guy at the petstore was pulling your leg. You should not see the yellow increase with age....it goes away.

Well that is good news for my boyfriend! Thanks for your advice! I imagine this guy is a yearling, so he still has some maturing to do Hopefully he will be black as coal all over, if not I'll like him all the same!

I talked to two people at the pet store. The first guy said that the white/tan bars or speckling were a sign of a bad breed of kingsnake. He showed me a little baby one and it had white spots on its back and tummy, very obvious.

He said that someone who was breedign them was screwing something up, i persume with maybe inbreeding or cross breeding of some sorts.

My guy is here. Is this the type of spekaling that will go away with time? Or is it the type that is caused by bad breeding?

Well, to me that looks like it's been contaminated with some other sub-species. It happens with splendida in the wild. I would also say, that's an adult animal you have there. I can't quite tell how large it is, but it looks fairly large. MBKs are one of the smaller subs of getula and usually top out at 36-40". Can you post a pic of the dorsom of your snake? It could be a Baja Cal. King.

Not sure what you meant by dorsom though...

Here are some more pics...

We looked up the baja and couldnt find to much information. Im guessing it is crossed with a subspecies. She/he is a real sweet heart though. Calms down great once you get her up. Just sits in your hand.

By those pics it looks like a Mexican black king to me. I have a couple that have yellow / white on the belly but only near the throat area. Nice looking kingsnake.
