Fea's viper

bloodpython7 Apr 02, 2004 06:08 PM

does anyone know how potent venom from a fea's viper is??? also like i asked about the tree and bush vipers, can a fea's viper kill a person? and do they live long in captivity and are there any captive bred fea's vipers??? because i rarely hear about them and i havnt seen anyone who has one. im just asking these questions because they are such fascinating snakes but there isnt much information to find on them and you rarely ever hear anything or see anything about them. if someone could answer my ?'s or give me some information on this rare snake it would be greatly appreciated!

fea's vipers ostensibly do not have a powerful venom, however, not much has been documented, as far as captive bred, there are a few, but they are very difficult to keep. I know that Sam Li in China at zoocon.com used to have some c/b that were well establised but very expensive i.e. 1000 . A coupple of zoos here have em as well. good Luck if you locate one.

From what I've heard, Fea's are an absolute nightmare to keep due to their incredibly delicate husbandry needs...the few that are imported usually are so dehydrated and debiliatated when they come in, that they have no real chance anyway. Couple that with the fact that even apparently healthy ones waste away rather quickly in captivity, and you can see that they make a very poor captive, regardless of the price. Unless you want to dedicate a ton of time and care to a single animal that still might not survive regardless of how well you take care of it, then Fea's are probably not the best choice. That being said, there are people who have successfully kept Fea's...BGF mentioned that he kept on in his bedroom because of their lower temp. requirements...

They sound very similar to Mandarin and Mollendorf's ratsnakes, both in their delicacy and in their preference for cool temps. If you want to get into Fea's I'd find those who established those ratsnakes in captivity and find out what they did. Of course talk to BGF too but I'd try and gather as much info as possible.

(that was my plan, anyway, if I ever have the money)
