Tank Size-- Please Help!

hansjegold Apr 02, 2004 06:24 PM

I have two southern painted turtles that are no longer babies (both 3-4 inches long). I'm having trouble controlling nitrates and think I need a new tank (currently using a 20 Gal breeder) as well as a good strategy to avoid nitrate buildup. Could anyone recommend a good tank size for my turtles...

For two adult painted turtles I'd say nothing smaller than 48 inches long and 12 inches wide (height, as long as its above 12 inches, is irrelevant) A "standard" 55 or 60 gallon tank is about 48 by 13 by 18 - 20.

I think a 48 by 18 or even 48 by 24 would make a better foot print (length, width).

So go with a 75 - 120 gallon tank.

And unless you tank is HUGE you should expect to need to do frequent partial or total water changes.
Relying upon biofiltration for turtles tanks doesn't usully work unless the turtles are tiny and/or the tanks are very large.
