Basking bulbs or heating pads?

What's the best way to provide heat to black ratsnakes? Do they prefer to curl under logs and get belly heat, or do they like to bask on branches under a warm basking light? I'm thinking about getting a rat snake soon and I was thinking about getting a heating pad, or maybe a RED lightbulb that provides overhead heat?

Any opinions?
