Berry Island Boas

fhayden1 Apr 02, 2004 09:06 PM

Hi. I'm looking for information on Berry Island Boas. Can someone give me some info or provide me with a link to a good source. I acquired and adult male Berry Island Boa today. I've beed searching for some info but I've not found anything yet.

Are these boas also called Haitian Boas?

Thanks,
Frank

Hey Frank,

Epicrates striatus fowleri closely resembles the Bimini Boa (Epicrates striatus fosteri). There is a folweri on Andros Island as well. They are hardy as captives and breed readily if given the proper cycling. This ssp. is uncommon in captive collections. This is partly due to the fact that neonates are small anolis feeders, and can be a little difficult to get to switch. Adults are notorious muskers. Who would want anyhting else?! I love 'em.

Any more questions shoot me an email.
Good luck,
Jay

Jay,
Thanks for the response. I didn't expect much response since they are not commonly kept. I'm glad at least someone responded. I suppose it will be next to impossible for me to find a mate for my male. This guy is something else. I was told he 17 years old. I'm not sure if he's fertile but I would really like to breed him.

Frank,
. I do not know a whole lot about striatus but some other species of Epicrates are still fertile past age 20. If you watch the boa classifieds here on kingsnake.com for awhile you should see eventually a female Berry Island/Andros available. There seems to be a couple of times a year that they get listed on the classifieds. You might try using the search function to see if you can find an older classified ad for them. I have also seen a couple of them at the Daytona Expo over the years.
Good luck,
Jeff
