Oh no! My JCP has an eating problem!

bloodycats Apr 02, 2004 09:27 PM

She just won't stop! She makes my best feeding ball pythons look anorexic. I've offered this girl rats and mice of all sizes (I have a bunch of tiny little fuzzy mice to get rid of) and she gobbles them up like a champ, no matter what I offer or when.

She's from the Learys- a Naomi baby. I plan on making her my display animal when I get the time and cash to set up a proper enclosure with all the bells and whistles. She sure isn't shy, and she sure is beautiful.

Being my first carpet, I think of her as just the beginning to another addiction. Seeing all these babies on the forum makes me want another carpet. I'm torn between going larger with a coastal or smaller with an IJ. Somehow I see myself doing both?? Why don't more people reccomend JCPs and other carpets as a beginner snake? Her husbandry is as "easy" as my balls' but she has 0% of their feeding worries. That and she's pretty, active and definately handaleable (after the neonate nips).

Here she is:

And having a bit of small-mouse snack:

The only reason more people don't start with them is because price and availability keep them out of many pet stores. I think that if you're going to begin with a boid, you should get a carpet or a hogg island. They're both really great.

How is it yours will eat both mice and rats? I've heard once you switch to rats don't go back to mice becasue some will absolutely not eat rats. Mine switched to rats with no problems and is eating 2 small rats 7-10 days. Yours looks very cool! Here is a photo of my "Safari"...

Janome-
Nice jungle. May I ask what breeder produced it? It looks very similar to my 98 Futo male (except mine is darker now that he's older). Thanks.

I don't know who bred him/her. I bought her at a reptile/fish store here in Phoenix,AZ last November. The salesman told me it was a female and the former owner was a school teacher so she is tame. Except at feeding time. She is about 4 foot and I guess going on 2 years old in the summer/fall. I have other photos of her but this site won't let me upload them as there are to many pixels. She is a great pet.

If yours is a '98 then he's full grown? How big is he? I've read JCP get to 6-8 feet. What type of enclosure to you house him in? Mine is in a 40 gallon breeder size tank right now.

I can tell when she'll eat because she will follow ever move I make outside the cage like she hasn't eaten for months. I guess she just smells rodent and dives in whether its a rat or mouse, big or small. I've never had to dangle prey longer than 10 seconds for her, rat or mouse. I would have never tried to have her eat mice after rats, but I haven't kept carpets, so not knowing how fast she'd grow I bought a big bag of small mice. She eats three in a feeding.

I thaw all the prey for my snakes together in the snakeroom, so whether she actually prefers mice or rats, she gets to smell them both for the time they are thawing. Maybe that starts her feeding response going and she just can't shut it off? I'm not complaining, whatever the reason is!

The Store i got her from called her Mikey after that kid in the old commercials "Hey Mikey he likes it" They told me that after they fed all the snakes in the store whatever hadent been eaten they thew in mikeys cage and she ate everything. Same proves for my collection Mikey is now my little rodent garbage disosal.
