Opinion on under tank heater...

tallyost Apr 02, 2004 09:36 PM

I keep a bulb on during the day, but at night i turn it off. The temp. drops but nothing below 65 degrees. I have an under tank heater, but i'm not sure about using it at night. I've used it once and it seemed to get really warm. I have a turf substrate like that of a miniature golf course. What are ya'lls opinion on this??

use the UTH. Run it through a thermostat or a reostat if it gets to hot. Some UTH get really hot. The UTH in my oppinion is the best way to heat them because they need the belly heat for proper digestion. keep the warm side of your tank around 85 degrees surface temp.

I have the same problem with my UTH. It is only a 15 watt one. I have it plugged into a zoomed 150w rheostat. WHen that is the only thing being regulated I have trouble keeping the temp under 95F. I have to keep the knob within a hair of off or it gets way too hot. FOr only being meant for 150w it should be built better to efficiently support lower power needs.

with the uth after you run it through the rehostat and its still to hot throw a few layers of paper towels under it...with the UTH you most likely wont even need the light...alll i use is an UTH on a rehostat and then i just have a flourescent light so theres some light in there... gl and any questions feel free to email me

Instead of the papertowels, I use a few layers of cardboard to raise up the tank and give more air flow. I only use a UTH for heat. I use fluorescent bulbs with UV simply to see them, shows the color nicely. But as you say this is not for heat at all. Bought three 1-month olds today. Will get some pictures up here soon.
