Finally getting around to posting some photos from the last couple weeks. Two rattlers and an alligator lizard. Total of three pics. Found two pacific gophers as well, but didn't liket he pics.

First up was a beautiful Northern Pacific Prairie Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis oreganus), found him curled up in the sun, next to a log that I moved. He was a small snake for an adult (had 13 segments on his tail). Most mellow rattler I've ever photo'd, he never rattled, and I probably could have held him like a non venomous (but thankfully the saner side of me prevailed).

Next up was a California Alligator Lizard (Elgaria multicarinata multicarinata). He was also under a log, and was pretty mellow as well, didn't crap or bite. Great pattern for a southern. Can't believe how well he posed for me, he sat there patiently until I was done.

Last up was another great oreganus. This guy was much more typical of Northern Pacifics, rattled like crazy, and very aggressive. This was almost the same size as the previous, but had only three segments. You can see his rattle is fuzzy, and you can guess why that is.....Amazing how different in color and in age/size relationship the two pacifics were, and in the same park!
Happy Herping!

Hey Curt

Nice finds. I'm just wondering what temps did you encounter these animals? It was warm a couple of weeks ago and now it cooled off here in NorCal. I went out when It got warmer a couple off weeks ago in early march and did find some animals but no rattlers yet. I usually encounter more when it gets really hot though. Or maybe I just didn't look hard enough. It's just amazing how variable the oreganus are like you pointed out. I was with a friend in the Sierras a couple of year back and saw two rattlers there. One was a huge dark and greenish animal and the other is a smaller lighter brown color. Other examples were the animals I've encountered here in the bay area while hiking and night driving. Although they are from different locations they look similar to the 2 animals that I saw from the Sierras. I have pics of them in my site. Check them out.

Btw, here's a Alligator lizard that I saw during my first hikes this spring. Thanks and take care.

Hey Jonel,
Great site, yeah, I love rattlers too. Two weeks from now I'm heading on a trip to look for red diamonbacks among other things.

The temps were warm (mid 70's), caught them all during that nice little hot spell we had a couple weeks ago. But, I've seen a few neonates since then just after dark on the roads. Temps were easily in the low/mid 60's. I find the little guys come out of hibernation first, and stay out a little longer in the early season cold temps.

Heading out in an hour or two, hopefully will find something today, even though the weather stinks. We need some hot weather!

Hey Curt

The weather was pretty warm here in San Jose on Saturday. I think we hit the low to mid 80's on saturday. What part of the bay are you from ? I'm also planning to look around later today and I'll post the results here. Thanks and let us know what you found yesterday. Take care.

Jonel

ps. here's another find from a couple of weeks ago.
