help with feeding!

i have a C.B. CHL and from what ive read on here and have been told by others is that they eat the red "fire" ants. so today i dug up a few and threw em in the cage... they started to attack my lizard and bite him.. i got all ants off him and out of the cage. but he didnt eat a single one. when i first got him i threw some tiny tiny crickets in the cage with him (24) and he ate 12. but that was about 3 days ago. does anyone know how i can get my lizard to eat these ants without being bitten by them?

!. CHLs do not eat "fire" ants. The red ants are Pogonomyrmex californicus, a native harvester ant.

2. If you have a CB CHL, you have, for one thing, a "protected species." As for CB, I have serious doubts. It is not legal to posses a protected species unless you have permits. It is not legal to sell, trade or transfere CHLs (CB or not).

3. Do not just "toss" in a bunch of ants in with a HL. The HL will panic because of a small enclosure. The ants are also in the defensive posture and will attack anything that moves. Chill the ants in the "fridge" for at least 30 minutes.

You can buy the Harvester ants in bulk at either: www.antsalive.com or www.infowest.com. DHL's cannot be kept for long on a diet of crickets or similar insects. They have evolved to feed exclusively on the Harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex spp.)
Good luck,
