Where can I find jungle "Buttress roots"?

peyote Apr 03, 2004 02:49 AM

I'm designing a tank soon for a pair of day geckos, and would love to incorporate some "buttress roots." These are the giant roots of the huge rainforest trees that stick up out of the ground, and are thin, but look like a solide "blade" type root that extends from the trunk into the ground. I think I saw a setup once that used these roots, and it looked amazing. Anyone know where I might find something similar?

I've seen exactly what you're talking about in fact I have it in one of my terrariums. They are not actually butress roots but drift wood or ghost wood pieces arranged to look like tree butress roots. Where you could see if the pieces are separate are camoflagued with being burried in dirt or somthing.

if you look around at pet shops, etc, you might find some cypress "drift" wood(even though cypress doesn't float or "drift"; cypress typically has that style of roots, with "knees" which prodrude up from the ground. If you aren't able to find any driftwood that can be used, you can get messy, and make your own customized tree out of glass fiber cloth, resins, etc.. This takes some practice, and is very messy. The plus side, is you can make it any shape, size, and color that you want. you can even incorporate little planters in it to provide areas for epiphytic plants to grow out of. Get creative...good luck!!

Thanks for the response....I've seen those cypress pieces, and that's not really where I wanted to go, so I think I'll have to make my own. I've worked with fiberglass before, but I think just shaping some expanding foam, then coating it and painting it would be the way to go...definately cheaper and faster if I mess up. Thanks!

They have fake buttress roots at my local petsmart. They are about 8 inches high, and about a foot long or so. I think they run about 19 bucks... not sure...they would be good for the sides or back for hide spots.
